Around Iceland in a Triumph TR4
The Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation (Hero) runs classic car trips across Europe — not simply holidays or tours but “regularity trials”, in which participants must drive set routes in set times.
Some enthusiasts take it so seriously that they arrive after covering more than 100 miles within seconds of the target time; others take a more light-hearted approach, enjoying the chance to drive beautiful roads and meet up with other classic cars and their drivers at coffee, lunch and overnight stops. Highlights include a circumnavigation of Iceland, passing volcanoes and glaciers on tarmac and gravel roads, and a week-long journey from London to Lisbon. Guests can choose from a fleet of rental cars, the most popular of which include a 1966 Triumph TR4A and a 1965 Ford Cortina GT. Prices vary according to trip and car chosen: the two-night, three day Summer Trial in Stratford-upon-Avon costs from £850 per person (based on two sharing); the week-long Iceland Saga trip in a TR4 costs from £6,995 for two people, with accommodation, food and mechanical assistance if needed.
